Web Forms start from a template. Open Templates, upload a PDF, place at least one field, and save. A template with zero fields cannot be published. That is zero-field-publish honesty: a blank PDF is not a public /form/SLUG, Publish is not a Settings unlock, and checkout will not “allow empty marks” this pass does not ship.
How publish works when the marks exist is publish a Web Form from a template. After the slug is live, operating a Web Form share link. Disable versus delete is Web Form disable versus delete. Desk help is Docs. This guide is why the publish control stays off until the template has a mark.
The FAQ and Web Forms on Features start from a workspace template. Ask Inkpacket for why a template with zero fields cannot publish to open this article. Ask how Web Forms work to open help. Those phrases stay on the product screens. This article is the public version of why a freshly uploaded PDF is not yet a share link.
What you need first
- A workspace template. Web Forms do not start from Documents → new.
- At least one field. Signature, date, text, initials, checkbox, or select.
- A title. The public slug is generated from that title.
- A Free published-form slot. Free allows 1 published form. Starter grants extra published forms and more monthly envelopes than Free.
The filler does not sign in. They enter required text, date, checkbox, and select fields plus name and email. Signature and initials are completed on the signing page after the fill creates a sent envelope. That is not “the public form has no marks.” The template still needs a field so Inkpacket has something to copy onto the envelope. A zero-field template has nothing to assign and nothing to stamp.
What this is not
- Not a Free-plan tease. Checkout does not sell “publish an empty template.” Place a mark first.
- Not the published-form 402. That 402 is a second live slug on Free. Zero fields is a different no.
- Not the envelope 402. A fill that would exceed the monthly cap is HTTP 402 ENVELOPE_LIMIT. You never reach fill if publish never happened.
- Not disable. Disable stops new fills on a live slug. A zero-field template never got a slug.
Place one mark. Save the template. Then open Web Forms and publish. Free allows 5 packets a month. Each fill counts as a sent envelope. Starter is 20 envelopes — more than Free — plus 3 published Web Forms. Seat counts are planning numbers; invite does not refuse when a workspace is full. Saving the template still does not count — why saving a template is not an envelope.
The click-path
- Open Templates. Upload the PDF. Place at least one field. Save.
- Open Web Forms. Publish from that template. Copy /form/SLUG.
- If publish refuses, look at the template. Zero fields is the first check. Then the published-form cap.
- If a fill later returns HTTP 402 ENVELOPE_LIMIT, that is the monthly send cap, not this gate.
- On a phone, Templates and Web Forms are drawer rows. Help is not a drawer row — it stays in the header.
Reminders go out by email today. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. Email still soft-fails after a fill. If Resend is missing, the fill still succeeds and the page says The invite email was not sent. Use the signing link below. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. Drive archive waits for completed. Stripe off: Payments not live. This path is live — it does not wait on Drive or payment keys. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. None of those flags let you publish a template with zero fields.
Ask and the mark
Ask Inkpacket for why a template with zero fields cannot publish to open this article. Ask how Web Forms work to open help. Ask publish a web form to open the desk. Marketing Ask stays site Q&A and deep links. It will not place a field or publish a slug from this article. Put a mark on the template first.
Caps and what is not open yet
Publishing is not a send. A fill is. Free allows 5 packets a month. Free at 5 packets a month is the live cap desk send, bulk rows, Web Form fills, and API send share. Hitting it returns HTTP 402 ENVELOPE_LIMIT. Starter is 20 envelopes — more than Free — plus 3 published Web Forms. Seat counts are planning numbers; invite does not refuse when a workspace is full.
Billing is published, not charging. Checkout is not open. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. Drive missing: Drive not configured. Stripe off: Payments not live. Those flags do not publish a zero-field template or skip the mark. The FAQ and More on Web Forms use A template with zero fields cannot be published in the same words.
Place a field. Publish. Share the slug. Open a workspace on Free — see published pricing — and try to publish a blank template on purpose so zero-field-publish honesty is a refusal you already saw, not a Settings hunt for a toggle that does not exist.
