Why Upload a PDF first is not a rejected upload
Inkpacket shows Upload a PDF first when a send-form hash opens Documents → new before a file is stored. That is hash-before-file honesty — not a picker refusal, not checkout.
Open Documents → new at /desk/documents/new with a send-form hash and no file stored yet. SMS, payments, fields, signing-link, routing, access-code, reminders, expiration, and embed hashes land on an empty picker. The amber notice says Upload a PDF first — then names the missing control. SMS options appear on the send form after upload. Payment options appear on the send form after upload. Field tools appear after upload. The signing link appears on the send form after you send. Other hashes say those options appear on the send form after upload. That is hash-before-file honesty: a deep link arrived before a PDF existed, the four picker refusals never ran, and opening Billing will not “materialize a draft from a hash.”
The four picker refusals are why a rejected PDF upload is not an envelope. Why a damaged Documents row is a later no is why This PDF could not be opened is not a rejected upload. Why a missing stored object is a later no is why The PDF could not be loaded from storage is not a rejected upload. Desk help is Docs. This guide is why Documents → new names a hash that arrived before a file, and why that name is not the picker saying no.
The FAQ and Features start from a PDF that actually landed. Ask Inkpacket for why Upload a PDF first is not a rejected upload to open this article. Ask how invite email works or how to upload a pdf to open help. Those phrases stay on the product screens. This article is the public version of Upload a PDF first — the family the empty new-document shell already uses next to the picker.
What hash-before-file covers
- Documents → new #sms with no file. Upload a PDF first — SMS options appear on the send form after upload.
- Documents → new #payments with no file. Upload a PDF first — payment options appear on the send form after upload.
- Documents → new #fields with no file. Upload a PDF first — field tools appear after upload.
- Documents → new #signing-link with no file. Upload a PDF first — the signing link appears on the send form after you send.
Routing, access-code, reminders, expiration, and embed hashes on the same empty shell use the generic line: Upload a PDF first — those options appear on the send form after upload. Reading any of those notices is not a send. No envelope exists yet. Free allows 5 packets a month. A hash-before-file notice does not return HTTP 402 ENVELOPE_LIMIT. Empty uploads at the picker return Upload a PDF file. Non-PDFs return Only PDF files are accepted. Unreadable bytes return This file could not be read as a PDF. Oversized files return PDF must be 15 MB or smaller. Those four strings ran a picker. Hash-before-file never opened the picker. A damaged Documents row says This PDF could not be opened — that envelope already exists. A missing stored object says The PDF could not be loaded from storage. A zero-byte object says The stored PDF is empty. Those strings are later doors on an envelope that already opened. This door is an empty Documents → new.
What this is not
- Not Upload a PDF file. That is zero bytes at the picker. This article is a hash that arrived before you picked anything.
- Not This PDF could not be opened. That string is a damaged Documents row. An envelope already exists.
- Not The stored PDF is empty. That string is a zero-byte preview on an envelope that opened.
- Not checkout. Billing is not open. Paying a listed price does not invent a draft from a hash.
Upload a valid PDF. The same hash then lands on the send form of that draft — SMS, payments, fields, or the later signing-link box. Reminders go out by email today. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. Email still soft-fails on the later send, not on this notice. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. Drive archive waits for completed. Stripe off: Payments not live. None of those flags hide Upload a PDF first or count an empty hash toward the monthly cap. The invite-email help already says Opening /desk/documents/new#signing-link before a PDF is uploaded asks you to upload first — the box appears after you send.
The click-path
- If Documents → new shows Upload a PDF first, use the picker. Do not open Billing for a hash draft.
- If the picker names empty, non-PDF, unreadable, or oversize, that is a different no. Fix the file. Still no envelope.
- After a valid upload the desk opens /desk/documents/:id and keeps a validated hash — #sms, #payments, #fields, #signing-link.
- If send later returns HTTP 402 ENVELOPE_LIMIT, that is the monthly cap, not this empty-shell notice.
- On a phone, Documents is a drawer row. The amber notice is the same. Help is not a drawer row — it stays in the header.
Where a good file lands is where uploaded PDFs are stored. Why a bounced file does not count is why a rejected PDF upload is not an envelope. Ask Inkpacket for why Upload a PDF first is not a rejected upload to open this article. Ask how invite email works to open help. Ask upload a pdf to open Documents → new.
Ask and the empty hash
Ask Inkpacket for why Upload a PDF first is not a rejected upload to open this article. Ask how invite email works or how to upload a pdf to open help. Marketing Ask stays site Q&A and deep links. It will not upload a file, invent a draft from a hash, or increment the monthly cap from this article. Upload first. Then the send-form control the hash named.
Caps and what is not open yet
Reading Upload a PDF first is not a send. Send of a draft that stored a readable file is. Free allows 5 packets a month. Free at 5 packets a month is the live cap desk send, bulk rows, Web Form fills, and API send share. Hitting it returns HTTP 402 ENVELOPE_LIMIT. Starter is 20 envelopes — more than Free — plus 3 published Web Forms. Seat counts are planning numbers; invite does not refuse when a workspace is full.
Billing is published, not charging. Checkout is not open. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. Drive missing: Drive not configured. Stripe off: Payments not live. Those flags do not invent a draft from a hash or hide the hash-before-file family. The FAQ and More on sending use Upload a PDF first in the same words.
Upload the PDF. Then use the hash. Open a workspace on Free — see published pricing — and open Documents → new #sms before picking a file so hash-before-file honesty is a named notice you already read, not a checkout you opened to “skip the picker” this pass does not ship.
