Why This PDF could not be opened is not a rejected upload
Inkpacket shows This PDF could not be opened on a damaged Documents row and offers Upload another PDF. That is list-open honesty — not a picker refusal, not checkout.
Open an existing envelope from the Documents list at /desk. A damaged row says This PDF could not be opened and offers Upload another PDF. The envelope already exists. The editor never loaded. That is list-open honesty: a later open failed on a row the picker already accepted, the four picker refusals never created this screen, and opening Billing will not “repair a damaged row.”
The four picker refusals are why a rejected PDF upload is not an envelope. Why a zero-byte stored object names itself is why The stored PDF is empty is not a rejected upload. Why an unreachable bucket is a later no is why File storage is unavailable is not a rejected upload. Desk help is Docs. This guide is why the Documents error screen names a damaged row, and why that name is not the picker saying no first.
The FAQ and Features start from a PDF that actually opened. Ask Inkpacket for why This PDF could not be opened is not a rejected upload to open this article. Ask how file storage works to open help. Those phrases stay on the product screens. This article is the public version of This PDF could not be opened — the string the Documents error already uses next to Upload another PDF.
What list-open covers
- A damaged Documents row. This PDF could not be opened. Upload another PDF starts a valid file.
- Try again retries the same open. If the object is still damaged, the same heading returns.
- A missing object later. The PDF could not be loaded from storage. That envelope already exists too.
- A zero-byte stored object. The stored PDF is empty. That is preview on an envelope that opened, not this heading.
Reading This PDF could not be opened is not a send. The upload already created the envelope. Free allows 5 packets a month. A damaged-row heading does not return HTTP 402 ENVELOPE_LIMIT. Empty uploads at the picker return Upload a PDF file. Non-PDFs return Only PDF files are accepted. Unreadable bytes return This file could not be read as a PDF. Oversized files return PDF must be 15 MB or smaller. Those four strings never opened this error screen. List-open is the later Documents miss. Upload a PDF first — SMS, payment, field, and signing-link hashes on Documents → new — is a draft that never stored a file. That string is another door.
What this is not
- Not Upload a PDF file. That is zero bytes at the door. No envelope.
- Not The stored PDF is empty. That string is a zero-byte preview on an envelope that opened.
- Not The PDF could not be loaded from storage. That string is a missing object, not this list heading.
- Not checkout. Billing is not open. Paying a listed price does not repair a damaged row.
Settings shows S3-compatible when S3_BUCKET, S3_ACCESS_KEY_ID, and S3_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY are set; optional S3_ENDPOINT points at R2 or another S3-compatible host. Otherwise Local fallback — uploads still work. GET /api/v1/health reports storage.configured and storage.backend. Health staying 200 does not open a damaged row. Reminders go out by email today. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. Email still soft-fails on the send, not on this heading. Text-message (SMS) is coming soon. Drive archive waits for completed. Stripe off: Payments not live. None of those flags count a list-open miss toward the monthly cap.
The click-path
- Open the envelope from Documents. If the page says This PDF could not be opened, use Upload another PDF.
- If the picker names empty, non-PDF, unreadable, or oversize, that is a different no. Fix the file before you create a row.
- If preview says The stored PDF is empty or The PDF could not be loaded from storage, that envelope already opened. Re-upload on that same id.
- If send returns HTTP 402 ENVELOPE_LIMIT, that is the monthly cap, not the list-open heading.
- On a phone, Documents is a drawer row. The damaged-row heading is the same. Help is not a drawer row — it stays in the header.
